gaogao

grow living generative art

gaogao is a web app for growing living generative art. Every artwork is an organism grown from a genome: a set of genes that express in phases into cells, colours, and patterns. No two are the same, and each is a link that reproduces the exact same artwork on any device.

Frequently asked questions

What is gaogao?

gaogao is a web app for growing living generative art. Every artwork is an organism grown from a genome; you roll new ones, keep the ones you love, breed two into offspring that inherit a mix of their genes, and share any of them as a link that reproduces it exactly.

How does breeding work?

Organisms are diploid: each gene has two alleles with dominance. Breeding two organisms recombines their genes per locus, so offspring inherit a Mendelian mix and are never simply the sum of their parents. Some traits are dominant, some recessive and hidden.

Is gaogao free?

Yes. gaogao is free for noncommercial use under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0. You can use it anonymously; signing in only syncs your collection across devices.

Who made gaogao?

Made by James Hussey of Inchworm Games.
